Billy "The Kid" Harris

Meet Billy "The Kid" Harris. He is my father and personal hero. We will be working on a biography about his experience with the NBA, his reign on the streets of Chicago and his new found redemption. This book will definitely be a page turner. Stay tuned to find out more about this Chicago Playground legend.

This was a surprise for me to find on the internet. I graduated from Dunbar with his brother Jimmy in 1971. Billy Harris went to Dunbar H.S. when I was there. He graduated in 1969 2 years before me. I remember a game against DuSable H.S. where I heard he scored 57 points in the game but we lost 83-81. I didn't see any of the games because I couldn't afford the money for the tickets. I do understand the pressure from going to a H.S. that had a superstar like Billy" The Kid" Harris. Whenever you play basketball in the neighbor-hood (Robert Taylor Homes) you had to represent your H.S. and because I went to Dunbar, I had to play the game the way I heard Billy ‘The Kid” did. I literally got beat up by the Blackstone Rangers street gang because of it. Now I know what made me play as hard as I did and why I gave up baseball to play basketball. He was really that good and on top of that, like me, he lived in the projects of Chicago. When I finally learned how to play and moved away to Detroit in 72’, I would ride around the city looking for basketball games, so I could showcase my skills and many times playing one on one for money. Detroit was tough, but It made me tougher. Thanks Billy for the memories
